Biography

I create atmospheric and evocative landscape paintings which have a sense of place. I aim to depict the emotions of being in the landscape, amongst the elements. I'm interested in capturing light and the transient weather we often experience here in the UK. Come and walk with me.

The UK's landscapes and coastlines are of endless inspiration to me and I'm drawn in particular to north west Scotland, Cornwall, Norfolk and the Peak District where I live.

Painting is a very meditative process. It is absorbing, often challenging, but always worthwhile and a complete joy. My preferred medium is oils as I love it's texture and versatility.

I've loved drawing, painting and exploring the great outdoors for as long as I can remember. Watching the weather building on the horizon and being in vast landscapes make my heart sing.

It's only recently that I have put all those things together into something that makes sense to me - capturing the mood and atmosphere of our magnificent natural world in my paintings.

A few years ago I decided that it was now or never. That if I really wanted to see what I could do with my creativity, then I had to give it some real focus. So I started learning, practicing, getting it wrong, trying again and loving the process.

My starting point is always outdoors, whether it be sketching - with pen, watercolour, charcoal, or painting in my favourite oils directly "en plein air" and taking reference photos. If I'm finishing paintings in the studio, I aim to keep the essence of my senses and feelings of being in the landscape.

For me it is a privilege to be out in the landscape, paintbrush in hand and is something that I know I will always do.
